Anna Isatou Bah was born in Faji Kunda, The Gambia. She is an autodidact artist known for her exceptionally wide creative range. During her early school years, she achieved outstanding results in the visual arts, particularly in traditional batik (tie-and-dye) techniques, where she experimented with natural pigments and various application methods. Following the tragic loss of her father, she temporarily paused her artistic journey to fulfill family obligations and support her mother and sisters.

Since 2019, Bah has fully returned to her creative practice. She creates powerful, colorful paintings on canvas and wood using mixed media in the style of Art Brut, alongside sculptures made from upcycled materials. Her unique pieces have been successfully exhibited and sold at local craft markets and to private collectors across The Gambia.

Since 2025, Bah has dedicated herself to studying and reviving forgotten West African art forms, with a strong focus on woodcut and linocut printing techniques. Today, she is recognized as the only professional female artist specializing in these printmaking disciplines in West Africa. In the coming months, she will expand her international reach by participating in several prestigious workshops across Africa and the United Kingdom.

INVITATIONS

01. June 2026 – Anna has been invited to participate in the prestigious ART27 - Artist Residency.

As part of this residency, she will produce commissioned paintings with an estimated value of 60,000 GMD. This significant support not only affirms her artistic talent but also provides the means to sustain her practice during the challenging rainy season, traditionally regarded as the low season.
